Coin and relic hunting is a reading game more than a depth game. The detectors here have clear target ID, adjustable discrimination and the separation to pick a coin out from the iron around it, whether you're working a city park or an old farm field. New to it? Start with our beginner's guide.

View full detailsOld coins and relics are fragile. Pinpoint before you dig, cut a clean plug with a proper digging tool, and use a pinpointer so you don't scrape the find. Don't clean old coins aggressively, as it can destroy their value. Always get permission, and leave protected historic sites alone. For deeper caches and older sites, see our treasure hunting detectors.
Look where people gathered long ago: old parks, fairgrounds, picnic spots, churchyards and old homesites, always with permission. Old maps and local histories show where buildings, paths and gathering places used to be. Areas that have been hunted heavily can still give up deep targets to a slower, more careful search. For the rules on public land, see our Florida detecting rules.
One with clear target ID, adjustable discrimination and good target separation. Most mid-frequency VLF detectors do well in parks and fields.
A machine with good separation in iron-heavy ground, stable ground balance and an option for smaller or DD coils. Many relic hunters prefer detectors with adjustable iron audio.
Usually not, or only very gently. Harsh cleaning can remove the surface and lower a coin's value. Rinse loose dirt off with water and let it dry.
