Choosing the right search coil
- Small coils: pick targets out of trash and work tight spots between rocks and roots.
- Large coils: cover open ground faster and reach deeper on larger targets, but add weight.
- DD vs concentric: DD coils handle mineralized soil and give a wider sweep; concentric coils pinpoint precisely in mild ground.
Check your detector's model and connector before ordering, since coils rarely fit across brands. Hunting gold? Small coils matter more there: see how to choose a gold detector.
Protect your coil
A coil cover takes the scrapes from rocks and gravel instead of the coil itself, and is far cheaper to replace. Check the cover fits your coil's exact size and shape, and rinse out sand and grit from underneath it now and then, since trapped debris can cause false signals.
