Complete your kit
The gear most detectorists buy in their first month. Tick any and it goes in the cart together.
An LCD detector that shows coin-type icons alongside the target number โ iron, nickel, penny, dime, quarter โ so a signal arrives as information rather than a guess. Notch filtering lets you silence the pull-tab range without going deaf to a gold ring reading beside it.

See the Target Before You Dig
Most detectors give you a number and leave you to work out what it means. This one shows coin-type icons alongside the target ID โ iron, nickel, penny, dime, quarter โ so a signal arrives as information rather than a guess.
For anyone in their first year that shortens the learning curve enormously. You dig a signal, see what it actually was, and start connecting the reading to the object. After a dozen sessions you are reading the ground instead of reacting to it, and you are digging far fewer empty holes.
Notch Filtering for Trashy Ground
Discrimination removes a whole range of targets from the bottom up. Notch is more surgical: it lets you reject one specific band โ the pull-tab range, say โ while still hearing everything above and below it.
On a picnic site or a well-hunted park that is the setting that keeps you sane, because it silences the single most common piece of trash without deafening you to gold rings that read nearby.
Four Controls, All Within Reach
Sensitivity, Discrimination, Notch and Volume are all set from the button panel through a straightforward menu and enter interface, with battery level shown on screen. When the ground gets noisy, bring sensitivity down rather than winding discrimination up โ a stable machine at a moderate setting hears more than a screaming one at maximum.
Comfortable Enough to Keep Using
The shaft collapses for transport and adjusts for height, and the arm cuff is padded. Small things, but they decide whether the detector comes out again next weekend.
